ARAPAE HALL AFFAIRS.
A well attended progress meeting of the Arapae Hall Committee was held in the hall on the evening of Tuesday, August 6th. Mr. Early was appointed to the chair. The report of Mr. Stead and Mr. J. McDonald, as chairman and secretary respectively of the Social Committee, revealed the following figures on the year’s working up to the present time, which covers approximately eleven months—Profit on dances, £36 19s 3d; hall hire, £3 15s; sundries, 18s 8d; making a total of £4l 12s lid; while outgoings on crockery, chairs, piano tuning, lighting, etc., showed an expenditure of £l4 4s 4d. A total amount of £26 6s was paid to the trustees, leaving a balance of cash in hand of £1 2s 7d. Mr. Early then called on Mr. Crocombe to report on the position as regards the Hall Committee. The report was as follows:—Cost of materials for extension, £29 15s 8d; electric installation, £5 16s; balance of old loans repaid £l7 10s; amount of new extension loan repaid, £2 10s, leaving a credit balance of 7d. Mr. Crocombe then remarked on the satisfactory results of the year’s wox’king, stating that the main hall is now paid for in full, while the loan for the extension is partly repaid, and that another such year would see the extension fully paid for. He went on to say that the Social Committee were to be congratulated on their successful efforts, that the work of the officers of the Hall Committee had been made light by reason of the fact that the Social Committee had carried the burden. Mr. Crocombe drew attention to the fact that the hall was filling a long-felt want in the district in that it is now used for church services on two Sundays in the month at which .the members of the congregation have numbered up to 37. The hall is also used for Tennis Club meetings and mission lectures for which no charge is made, proving that there is spiritual as well as social benefit. The surounding community had been brought into close touch and are able to work together in mutual matters tending to make for more interest generally. He finally congratulated the ladies on their close and kindly attention to the catering which had been creditably performed. After the accounts had been passed the meeting went on to consider the question of the hall’s 'first day anniversary, which will take place in the form of a dance on September 7th. It was arranged to make it a particularly joyous function, and offers were made for the supplying of the ingredients for the making of two birthday cakes. An amount of half a guinea was donated by members to be placed in one cake in silver coins, and suggestions for making the entertainment a- special one were received from all parts of the hall.
The present officers and committee were re-elected to continue for the coming year, and Messrs. Stead and McDonald thanked the members for their continued confidence. Mr. Early, in closing the meeting, thanked the community for their efforts and co-operation in bringing about the success attained. Enthusiastic workers immediately set to work to prepare the floor for a dance to be held this eveninug.
