SETTLERS' ASSOCIATION
THE PItO PIO BRANCH. The usual monthly executive meeting of the Pio Pio Settlers' Association was held on the 3rd inst. Mr. W. Stead, of Arapae, was added to the executive. It was resolved to make further representations to the Department of Agriculture re the installation of a telephone in the residence of the Stock Inspector at Te Kuiti. At present great difficulty is experienced by settlers in getting in touch with this officer when urgently required. In view of the fact that new tenders are being called for the carriage of mails, the secretary was instructed to write to the postal authorities asking for the reinstatement of the 9 a.m. delivery to Pio Pio. This service is more satisfactory than the present 11 a.m. delivery as it allows more time between the incoming and putgoing mails. It was brought to the notice of the meeting that there was a possibility of a teacher being withdrawn from the Pio Pio school owing to the fall in the average attendance. It was resolved that a letter be sent to the Minister of Education impressing on him the necesity of, retaining the present full staff at the Pio Pio school; and that the number on the roll and not the average attendance should.be taken as a basis of staffing. Mr. A. H. Morris, president of the Young Farmers' Club, reported that the club had been formed, and would hold meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month. He stated that some of the advantages of membership included several lectures a year, demonstrations of stock, field days, and visits to freezing manure 1 works, etc.
