DRIVERS' LICENSES

RAID BY INSPECTOR. OFFENDERS BEFORE COURT. Caught by the Waitomo Traffic Group Inspector, Mr. R. H. McKenzie, in a raid on licenses made on 28th June, a number of motorists were charged in the Magistrate's Court yesterday with operating vehicles without being the holder of a motor driver's license. They were all fined 20s and costs amounting to either 10s or 12s. Those who were caught were V. Allerby, Wm. Brand, J. Dowdall, J. A. Fitton, H. F. Johnstone, E. P. McFarlane, E. V. Remnant and N. Snowden.

Overloading-.

Mate Beros was charged with overloading on the Mangaotaki Road, the inspector saying that his lorry had been 6 ton lewt. 201bs, or 1 ton llcwt 201bs over-weight, when put over the loadmeters. Beros held that as he had an arrangement with the County to repair any damage he might cause to the road he was allowed to overload, but the Magistrate would not allow this defence, and fined him 70s, costs 10s. G. D. Paxton was fined 30s and costs for overloading, the inspector stating that the lorry had been loaded 6cwt. above the licensed load.

Noxious Weeds

A prosecution under the Noxious Weeds Act was brought by W. G. Bonner, inspector of noxious weeds, against A. W. Lamb, owner of the old site of the Parker, Lamb sawmill at Hangatiki. The area was stated to be a mass of blackberry and gorse. The case was adjourned to the 20th inst. to permit the owner to do the necessary work.
