BRITAIN'S AIR FORCE
INCREASE JUSTIFIED. . SPEECH BY MR. BALDWIN. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 12.20 p.m.) London, May 27. Mr: Stanley Baldwin, addressing a meeting of Women Consei’vatives, defended the reinforcement of the Air Force,, and said that Hitler’s advent to' power had changed the whole situation. England knew immediately and the world would know tomorrow if England built a single aeroplane or enlisted half a dozen soldiers, but the German dictator could veil his country’s preparations. . Germany’s activities had increased Europe’s apprehension, but panic was needless. Nevertheless England must defend not only the narrow seas but the air above them. No Government could exist which allowed Britain’s Air Force to become inferior to any within striking distailed. Air forces created fear in Europe, therefore an aerial agreement was vital. The greatest means of security would be Anglo-American collaboration embodying sanctions that no earthly power dared defy, but perhaps these could never be obtained. The Government’s object _ was to maintain security and Britain would work harmoniously with all nations to try and achieve a limitation of armaments and European' security.
