In the Davis Cup doubles between New Zealand and Australia at Eastbourne, Crawford and Quist (Australia) defeated Malfroy and Stedman (New Zealand), 6—3, 4—6, 6—l, 6—4 The weather is dull and cold and the attendance is far below that of Saturday. The Australians' Unanswerable smashing from the New Zealanders' uncertain lobs gave Australia a s—o lead, and Quist's smashing and volleying enabled Australia easily to take the set.
Stedman's driving service improved in the second set. Crawford twice double faulted and the New Zealanders ran a 5—3 lead, and Malfroy held his service. The New Zealanders deservedly won the set. Quist's fierce smashing plus the New Zealanders' errors gave the Australians the third set. The New Zealanders were down I—3 in the fourth set, but Malfroy captured his own service and Quist missed two volleys, thus evening the games, 3 —3. The New Zealanders led 4—3, but Crawford won his service and the Australians went on to clinch the set.
