King Country Chronicle Tuesday, May 14, 1935. A COMPLETE COALITION.

A complete amalgamation of the Reform and United Pai'ties has been announced, and the two will now make an appeal to the country as one body. The name, National Political Federation, is an appropriate one, and should m&et with the a?> .proval of the electors. This country is facing a national crisis, and a multiplicity of political parties is not the right way to deal with the. many grave problems that have to be faced in the near future. Great Britain has found this out, and the National Goverrfment of that country has proved a great success, so much so that Britain to-day, notwithstanding the enormous difficulties she has had to face, is showing- a much more satisfactory position month by month than any other country. If the Re-

form and United Parties appealed to the electors as two separate bodies, even with the promise of a coalition if returned to the Treasury Benches, the cause of both would have suffered at the elections. Now there is a straight-out issue between the National Government and Labour, which will simplify the issue at the ballot box. So far the intentions of the new Democratic Party are obscui'e, but it is not likely that it will contest all seats, for its leaders are not looking to occupy the Treasury Benches. Later advices indicate that there is some dissension between members of the Cabinet regarding a full fusion of the two parties. The Hon. Adam Hamilton, representing the Reform Party, states that there has been no permanent fusion, while the Hon. E. A. Ransom and the Hon. R. Masters are rather reticent about making any further statement. It will be interesting to know what the opinion of Mr. Coates will be when he receives news of the reported fusion. If there is dissension between the two parties, and the elections six months ahead, with the Democratic Party in the field to capture some seats, the chances of Labour at the end of the year will be very much increased. *
