A FATAL COLLAR
The death of Charles Valentine Croucher, an electrical motor attendant, who was found huddled up near the wall of the pumping station where he was employed, was at the inquest at Portsmouth attributed to the wearing of too tight a collar. A doctor said that the man was wearing a collar so tight that he found it was impossible to insert a finger between it and the neck. There were no external injuries, and there were symptoms of death from slow asphyxia. In the doctor’s opinion Croucher was overcome by the effects of drink, and lay down. His death was due to asphyxia caused by the collar being too tight, accelerated by the cold air, while he was in a state of alcoholic stupor. A verdict of death from misadventure was re. turned.
