MOKAU DROWNING
ACCIDENTAL HOEATH. NEED FOR WARNING SIGNS. An inquest into the circumstances of the death of Owen I. McGregor, a farmer of Aria, who was drowned on Monday afternoon while bathing in the surf at the Pura-Pura beach, near Mokau, was held at Awakino on Thursday before Mr. H. L. Northern, J.P., and a jury consisting of Messrs. J. Cowper (foreman), A. Bartlett, J. Bullock and A. Erichson. Constable Powel conducted the proceedings on behalf of the police. Charles P. McGregor, a brother of the deceased, gave evidence of identification. Alfred Barnett and C. P. McGregor stated that they saw Mr. McGregor in difficulties in the breakers, but could not reach him to give assistance because of the strong under-current. Evidence of the finding of the body on the beach near Pioi, about, six miles north of where the fatality occurred, was given by George Dixon, manager of the Pioi Station. The jury returned a verdict of accidental drowning and added a rider urging the authorities to erect a sign at the locality warning bathers of the dangers.
