DO YOU KNOW? Q. —Where is New Zealand's largest and most modern tobacco factory situated? A.—At Petone, Wellington. Q. —What famous tobaccos are manufactured there? A.—Blue Shield (Medium) and Red Shield (Dark). Q. —Where does the New Zealand Tobacco used come from? A.—The Nelson Province. After it has been cured it is sent to Wellington. _ Q. —What do you mean by curing? A. —The leaf when picked is a green vegetable product. Cui'ing means drawing from the plant the surplus moisture —at the same time leaving the leaf in perfect condition until required for manufacture. Q. —How is it cured? A.—The leaf for the Dominion, Tobacco Company is flue cured—in large kilns in which the heat is regulated for the required pei'iod in the ideal manner. Q. —Is it a more satisfactory method than air curing? A.—Certainly—because you cannot rely on the sun and air to produce from day to day the necessary degree of heat and dryness. Q. —Then curing is a very important stage? A.—Yes—because mistakes made then can never be rectified. All the leaf for Blue Shield and Red Shield has been flue cured. (66)
"A New Zealander now on a visit to Manchester made an interest com ment this afternoon," states the Manchester Guardian of October 11. "You British," he said, "could help us and yourselves a great deal more than you do. For example, since I have been over hei-e I have seen butter pi-iced in your shops at 9d a pound. In many of your restaurants you have to nav Id for a nat of butter, and thei-e are 4 of them to the pound. I have weighed them. Why should anyone want to make a profit of 400 per cent, out of an article for which in New Zealand restaurants no charge at all is made? The more you encourage your people to eat our butter the more money we shall have to spend on Lancashire cotton goods.'
