HAMILL SHIELD

OLD BOYS v. PIO PIO. A two point victory was gained by Old Boys when they met Pio Pio on the latter's ground, they being 46 runs ahead on the first innings' total. . Pio Pio went in first to gain 62. They made a fine start, having a total of 40 runs for the first two wickets, the two Ronaldsons hitting out. But after that their luck was out —Arneil was caught by Corin off McNaught, the most successful bowler, when his total was but four, and a succession of ducks were included in the remainder of the total.

Old Boys were more consistent, though Arneil's bowling was causing them trouble, as evidenced by the fact that his average was 8 for 41, but the batsmen, particlarly Hine (23) and G. Corin (25) were scoring freely off Ronaldson and the other bowlers. With 108 as their total Old Boys secured the victory. Time was short and sixes frequent when Pio Pio went to the crease again. They hit the ball all over the field. However, the wickets were tumbling, and six were down for 32 when Arneil came in. He banged away at everything that came down —Neal, Ronaldson and B. Smyth following suit. The speed of the scoring may be judged from the fact that one bowler in 6 overs had 51 runs against him. Details of the scores were as follows: — PIO PlO.—First Innings. N. OTOROHANGA. Fielding only a weak team of nine players, Kiwis were fortunate not to have their unbeaten record marred when they played Waitanguru last Saturday. With Ashworth come to light and Dew also in double figures, Waitanguru were credited with 67, a total which appeared large to the nine Kiwi players. Paice, who hit out strongly, and C. Armstrong saved the situation, and at six wickets down the Waitanguru total was passed despite the bowling of Jury. Following were the scores:— WAITANGURU.—First Innings.
