FLOODS IN NORTH

LARGE AREAS INUNDATED WORST FOR 35 YEARS. STOCK LOSS NOT HEAVY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Whangarei, this day. As the result of the heavy rainfall since Friday last, but especially since Saturday night, large areas in the far north are flooded. Jji some places the floods are the highest for 35 years, but fortunately farmers had received warning in time to remove their stock to higher levels, and as a consequence losses are not heavy. For the first time since 1917 the big bridge over the Mangakahia River at Titoki is under water, and as a result there has been no cream collection since Sunday. Several bridges have been swept away and much damage done to roads. The rainfall at Whangarei since Friday was 5.76 inches, but owing to the dryness of the ground due to the lengthy dry spell, flooding has not occurred in the town. The Hikurangi swamp promises to be badly flooded. Kaikohe was evidently the storm centre, 12 inches of rain being recorded within 24 hours. All approaches to the town have been cut off. Kohukohu also suffered a good deal. Railway Service Disorganised. All road communication with the north have been cut off owing to the flooding, which is several feet deep in places. The railway service has been completely disorganised, and there will be no trains north of Hukerenui today. The latest information is that 19 inches of rain were registered in Kaikohe town within 48 hours. The district is temporarily isolated. All the low-lying country is like a series of lakes.
