"If I had a farmer audience I would tell them how they have cut their own throats," said Mr. Richards, M.P., at the Parish Hall last evening. "The people put the Coalition in, the Reform Party and the worst remnant of the once great Liberal Party, when lead to believe that theirs was the only constructive policy. They asked for a blank cheque and got it. Then four months ago, as the first part of their constructive policy this farmers' Government reduced the purchasing power of the best customer New Zealand ever had," he continued. "By reducing the wages of the people they took £26,000,000 out of circulation. That had grown to £70,000,000 to-day lying in the banks of this country." And the banks were paying 14 to 15 per cent, to-day on watered shares and stock and debentures. The money power, he said, was a thing the Labour Party had to grapple with.
