The conger eel is noted for exceeding ferocity at times, and the recent experience of a Bluff fisherman whilst engaged in scrubbing the bottom of the ketch Makura at the head of the harbour bears ample witness to the fact, writes the Southland Daily News correspondent. The eel sank its teeth into the fisherman's gumboot and commenced a vigorous tugging. Released by a companion, who killed the eel, which measured seven feet in length, the fisherman examined the boot and found it to be unfit for further use. The encounter took place at night-time in about two feet of water.
