SEVERE FROST
LOCAL GARDENS SUFFER. An unusually heavy frost for this time of the year was experienced last night and early this morning, and several gardens suffered heavily. Potato tops were blackened and they will suffer a severe setback. In most cases tomato plants this morning showed a withered look and were blackened in the same way as the potatoes. The frost was most severe for this time of the year, and similar visitations have been reported from other parts of the Dominion. The fruit crops in some parts of Central Otago have been completely ruined in one night. Bitterly cold weather is being experienced on the East Coast round Gisborne and Opotiki. The weather report for the next 24 hours indicates that a further frost may be experienced this evening, and garden lovers would be well advised to take all precautions possible to save further damage.
