The Retail Traders' Association of New South Wales has recommended to its members that the 2s basic wage reduction be not applied. Thus far eleven Sydney firms have declared that they will not reduce the wages of their staffs in conformity with the new declaration, some stating that they consider the wage already too low, and a reduction would affect the spending power of the community. The Premier, Mr. Stevens, consults his Ministerial colleagues to-day to determine the Government's policy regarding the new basic wage. STRIKE AT BROKEN HILL. OVER 600 MEN IDLE. Following the refusal of the management of the Broken Hill South Mine to concede the demands by members of the industrial union for a minimum of 4d a ton for breaking and filling ore, the members decided to stop work and 661 men are now idle. The State is now experiencing a heat wave, extremely dry atmospheric conditions prevailing in the inland districts and temperatures soaring over 100 degrees. Many bush fires are reported in some parts and grass and fencing have been destroyed. MEAT WORKERS' STRIKE. MEN ACCEPT TERMS. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 8.40 a.m.) Melbourne, this day. The strike at the export meat works in the metropolitan area collapsed when the slaughtermen and labourers affected decided by a large majority to accept the conditions outlined by the exporters. These conditions include the team system of killing. It is not likely that many of the strikers will be re-engaged, as most of the volunteers are already well established at the various works.
