STH. AFRICAN DROUGHT
HUGE LOSSES BY FARMERS. MANY COMPLETELY RUINED. According to recent reports received South African farmers have been ruined as the result of a terrible drought, in which it is estimated that by the end of winter the losses of all kinds of sheep will be near 12,000,000. The report states that farmers and graziers there are in a desperate position. One correspondent states: "My estimate of the mortality of sheep which I sent you (4,000,000 head) is far below the mark, and from a more recent calculation the loss of all kinds of sheep by the end of the winter will be nearer 12,000,000, of which about 7,000,000 will be merinos. "The farmers have never had such a time in the history of the country, and men who were wealthy a few years ago are completely ruined today. Farms are selling at what they will bring, as low as Is a morgen (2y 8 acres) being accepted. Dairy cattle are quite unsaleable as there are no pastures left, and stocks of feeding stuffs are unprocurable. Even after stopping the export of mealies, there will not be sufficient to go •round, and the Government is in a dilemma."
