THE BUTTER MARKET.
It will be welcome news to the Dominion that Germany has enlarged its quota of imports of Danish butter, for it means that the congestion on the London markets will be relieved to some extent. Another tendency to lift prices will be the action of the South African Control Board agreeing to the importation of 6000 cases of butter owing to a local shortage. Imports of Australian butter into Britain have shown a heavy decline last mo'nth as compared with the same period last year, but as favourable rains have been experienced in Australia it can be expected that the production from this source will show an increase for the rest of the season. Russian exports of butter to Britain fell off last year, but these are again mounting up, and Russia is now the fourth largest exporter of butter to Britain. Reports from Northern Europe indicate the possibility of a substantial drop in butter production there owing to the abnormally hot weather that has been experienced. Reviewing the whole position, the outlook for dairying in this Dominion is very much better than it was twelve months ago, and should obviate any necessity for the imposition of a quota in the meantime. This will provide a welcome respite to the dairying industry of this, country. The change in outlook may be only temporary, being brought about by nature, but this should ensure a stability of prices for the first months of the season.
