THE WAITOMO CAVES
“MOST BEAUTIFUL SIGHT IN THE WORLD.” TRIBUTE BY WORLD-WIDE TRAVELLER. There is one resident of the United States who has a warm appreciation jof the scenic beauties of New Zealand. This is a lady now living in Sacramento and who toured the Dominion some years ago. In a letter to this paper she pays a tribute to New Zealand’s natural beauties and its people, and sent a brief summary of a broadcast radio programme called, “Believe It or Not,” by Robert L. Ripley, the world traveller, who had completed a tour of 151 countries. The speaker summarised his experiences as follows: The most mysterious country— India. The most fascinating country— China. The most beautiful country—lsland of Bala. The most interesting city—Peiping. The most dangerous country— Manchuria, where he saw twelve * heads strung on a wire along a street. The most unfriendly country— France. The happiest place he had visited was a small town called “Hell” _in Norway, where there were green hills and beautiful girls. The name “Hell” was not used in the English sense, being symbolical of verdant slopes. The speaker finished his summary by stating that “the most beautiful sight he had seen in all his travels was the Glow Worm Cave at Te Kuiti, New Zealand.”
