A man became a millionaire by selling cheap patent medicines. He sold an incredible quantity of his stuff by catchy advertising. He was a cynical brute. On his desk was a brass tablet with these words on it: “You’ve got to make ’em sick first.” In every advertisement he began with a lot of symptoms. He would ask, for instance: “Do you have fits of depression?” “Do you feel languid at times?” “You’ve got to make ’em Feel 111!” “Are you irritated by noises?” “Do you dislike getting up in the mornings?” “If you have these symptoms, then you have liver trouble, and you can be cured by our Liver Renovator —half-a-crown a bottle.” It is a curious fact, and this charlatan knew it, that if the average person reads a list of a dozen symptoms, she is sure to think she has several of them. An advertisement, in a word, can make a person feel ill and in a humour to buy medicines. This man made a fortune by knowing this fact. He. made a rascally fortune.
