HITLER AND THE SAAR
"BACK TO GERMANY" THE ONLY WAY. "THOSE ACROSS THE BORDER LIE." Cologne, August 30. Chancellor Hitler to-day told 50,000 inhabitants of the .Saar that there was only one way for them, namely, "Back to Germany." He was addressing a monster Nazi demonstration under the shadow of the Germania statue which was erected overlooking the Rhine opposite Bingen, to commemorate the foundation of the German Empire in 187071. Under the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles, the inhabitants of the Saar basin are now being administered by the League of Nations. In 1935, however*, they are to decide by means of a plebiscite whether they will return to their former German allegiance, or become French subjects (they are already included in the French Customs regime) or continue to be administered by the League. • To-day's meeting was organised by the German Saar League, which is under Nazi control. Many thousands of people at Bingen and Ruedesheim heard Herr Hitler's speech through loud speakers. Terrorism Denied. The Chancellor was given an enthusiastic reception. Storm troops had to adopt forceful tactics to clear a way for them. He said: "Those across the border lie when saying that the German people are being terrorised and oppressed. I am at anytime willing to appeal again to the people, and I am sure that five-sixths of the electorate will stand behind me. "Over 100 times we have declared that we do not want another war. We don't wish to annex anything that is foreign to us. If treaties are to be holy they must, of course, be enforced not only against us but also against our opponents. "The Saar people must forge their own destiny, and I know every vote will be for Germany. We desire an understanding with France on all questions, but never will Germany renounce the Saar region, as the Saar region will never abandon Germany." President Hindenburg sent a telegram which made reference to the "inextinguishable connection of the German Saar district over the whole of Germany."
