The Minister of Agriculture for the South African Union, Mr. J. C. Kemp, has issued a permit to the Dairy Association to import butter. The drought has caused a shortage resulting in an advance in price to 2s 5d per lb. The Union has exported 5,000,000 lbs of butter, which is selling overseas at B%d a lb.
Mr. Wakatsuki, formerly Prime Minister of Japan, declared to-day that a failure of the Naval Conference in 1935 would precipitate a new armament race between Japan and the United States, which would be disastrous for Japan.
A rising has occurred among the troops in Eastern Siam and they have captured Donmuang aerodrome, which is a regular lahding stage for air services from Europe.
The President of the Board of Trade, Mr. Walter Runciman, said that Britain is in the happy position of regaining bit by bit her old position of the great major trader of the world.
Dr. Dollfuss and Prince von Starhemberg have reached an agreement that the whole Heimwehr shall join the Chancellor’s “Patriotic Front,” in which the Prince will become the Chancellor’s right-hand man. Together with the Vice-Chancellor, Major ‘Fey, this move completes a powerful triumvirate to combat the Nazis.
The senior pilot of the Red Army’s experimental branch, Evseyeff, claims a. world’s record for a delayed parachute jump. He leaped from an aeroplane at a height of 23,400 ft and waited 2m 12%s (during which he descended 22,912 ft) before he opened his parachute. Evseyeff says the temperature when he jumped was 60 degrees below zero.
A joint industrial council, at a meeting in Manchester, discussed the serious effect of Japanese competition with the British silk industry, which is causing much unemployment. A resolution was carried urging the Government to regulate Japanese imports, and if necessary totally prohibit them.
The Prime Minister of the Australian Commonwealth, Mr. J. A. Lyons, in the House of Representatives, Stated that no provision was being made for a resumption of the payment of interest and sinking fund on the war loan to Britain.
Death on the gallows or service to humanity on the operating table? Dr. Mcßride, the noted medical authority, has written a book, “Doctors and Patients,” jn which he declares that 'criminals should not be hanged or flogged, but should be used for medical and surgical experiments.
The Canberra correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald says that a serious situation has developed in the Federal Parliament. It was learned that the Country Party intends to insist upon an amendment of the bill to give further concessions to old age pensioners.
