AND ASSYRIANS.

(Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 10.45 a.m.) Calcutta, August 28.

The veil is gradually lifting from the recent events in Iraq, and there is now no doubt that a massacre took place at the village of Smel, forty miles from Mosul, in which it is alleged the fleeing Assyrians and Christians passed the night. According to the Baghdad correspondent of the Calcutta Statesman, the soldiers of the Iraq army entered the village and proceeded to butcher the seven hundred inhabitants. All the victims were unarmed.
