UNEMPLOYMENT ROLL

INCREASE FOR MONTH. NEARLY 73,000 REGISTERED. Figures issued by the Unemployment Board on Saturday show that the number of men on the unemployment register on June 10, or transferred therefrom to schemes other than scheme No. 5, was 72,918. This represents an increase of 2416 as compared with the previous total on May 13. Of the 72,918 men, 5802 were ineligible for relief for various reasons, leaving 67,116 men a charge on the boards' funds. These 67,116 men are engaged as follows: —Scheme No. 5 (excluding those on gold prospecting), 47,337. Subsidised employment on farms under schemes Nos. 4a, 4b, farm camp schemes, etc., 9977. Camp schemes (mostly single men): Land improvement and development, 1718; highways and backblock roads, 1011; afforestation, 781; total, 3510. Subsidised employment at standard rates of pay by Public Works Department (mostly married men), 2125. Building subsidy scheme (contracts approved last year), 477. Gold prospecting: Scheme No. 5, 2854; other schemes, 741; total, 3595. Miscellaneous (subsidised employment in various industries), 95. Of the 67,116 men it is estimated that at least 35,000 men are engaged on work of a definite reproductive and developmental nature in connection with the Dominion's primary industries.

The apparent decrease since May 13 in the number engaged on scheme No. 5 is accounted for by the presentation of subsidised gold prospectors under a separate heading. Men employed by the Public Works Department at standard rates of pay with the subsidy from the Unemployment Fund' were previously included under the heading of "camp scheme."

The total numbers shown since the present form of returns was adopted have been:--September 3, 73,241: October 1, 73,596; October 29, 71,971; November 26, 69,311; December 24, 69,281; January 21, 67,865; February 18, 65,782; March 18, 66,652; April 15, 68,255; May 13, 70,502; June 10, 72,918.
