ERA OF PROSPERITY
_ •*. TRADE COMMISSIONER'S VIEW. The opinion that matters commercially are picking up and that the world is on the eve of an era of prosperity was expressed by Mr. Julian B. Foster, the American Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, who was one of the guests of honour at a farewell luncheon tendered by the English-speaking Union yesterday at Wellington. Mr. Foster's office in New Zealand has been closed, and with his wife he is leaving shortly for Washington. Mr. Foster thanked the members of the union for their hospitality, saying that most of his life he had been a roamer, but that for the past six years he had been in Wellington. He felt now that he was leaving more friends behind than he had ever done in his life. The power for good of the English-speaking Union was enormous, for undoubtedly the two leaders in the reconstruction era which he believed was just around the corner would be the United and Great Britain. He thought the- future of the world depended on the friendship of the people of these two countries, and it had never been as close as it was to-day. The American Consul-General (Mr. Calvin M. Hitch), in the course of his remarks, said that the closing of the American Trade Commissioner's office in Wellington was due to no dissatisfaction on the part of the Government with the conduct of the affairs of the office, but was solely a matter of economy. Mr. Hitch paid a tribute to Mr. Foster for the efficient manner in which he had discharged his official duties.
