DISTRICT NEWS

TANGITU Own Correspondent). The dance held in the Tangitu Hall last week-end, under the auspices of the Mapiu Football Club, was a very enjoybale function, there being a large crowd present from all parts of the district. Musicians for the eveningwere Messrsr. H. Moore (piano), A. Cooper (banjo), A. Fitton (violin), and their efforts were greatly appreciated by the dancers. The M.C. for the evening was Mr. Pat Donnelly, who as usual carried out his onerous duties to the satisfaction of all. The The floor was in good order, and the supper provided was ample and good. During the evening extras were played on" the piano in Fine style by Mr. J. Campbell. Mr. W. Pittams sang in splendid style, and the demand for an encore was too insistant for him to refuse. He was loudly applauded for both items. . The football teams of the district have now commenced their battles, there being four teams—Mapiu, Waimiha, United, and Settlement—and it is expected that some great play will be seen during the season. On Saturday last the Settlement and Mapiu teams met for their first tussle, when a great 'game was played, ending in a win for Settlement, but from all that I can gather, the Mapiu team_ looks well in the running for the district shield. The game was played on the Settlement Ground, about a mile from ! Waimiha. On the same Saturday, later in the afternoon, United and Waimiha teams met, and the game was considered a very hard fought contest, the Waimiha team being much lighter generally than the United, was looked upon as having put up a great fight, and when these teams meet again, the winner on that occasion may not be the United, the winners of last Saturday's match. The Public Works contractor, Mr. R. Spears, is pushing on with the metalling repairs on the Mapiu section of the main highway, and when the work is completed it will mean that this portion of the highway will stand the wear and tear of the very heavy vehicular traffic for some time. It is good metal, and will stand up well, we are informed, to what is demanded of it.
