MANIAPOTO SILVER BAND
POPULAR CONCERT. The Empress Theatre was well filled on Sunday evening last when a nicely varied programme was submitted. The Band, under the baton of Mr. A. D. Timbers, was in excellent form, particularly in the old favourite "Handel's Celebrated Largo," other popular being "Scotia," a selection based on Scottish airs; concert selection, "L'lntrepide"; the novelty selection '.'Swanee River," as well as the rousing marches, "Thin Red Line" and the "27th Regiment" were very well intei-preted, fully meriting the applause given. Mrs. Baddeley sang very sweetly "The Valley of Laughter" and "Smilin' Through." Both were delightfully rendered, and we hope to hear this singer again soon. Dr. Isaac, despite the handicap of a heavy cold, pleased his hearers in both "There's a Big Lot of Sunshine" and "To-morrow."
Mr. Laurie Cotter sang "A Shanty in Old Shanty Town." Although a little nervous, this young singer acquitted himself creditably. Mr. E. Whitton gave quite a varied turn, his solo march on the mouth organ being well executed. A short sketch at the piano, as also songs at the piano, "Twenty-one Years" and "Lily of Laguna," pleased his audience immensely. The door collection was satisfactory, and the thanks of the Band are due to the performers and Mrs. Raine, also Mr. N. Cole and Miss Davis for loan of chairs for stage.
