WEST INDIAN CRICKETERS
"JARDINE QETS HIS MEDICINE."
BRITISH NEWSPAPER COMMENT.
(Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 1.30 p.m.) London, May 22.
In the match with the West Indian team, Marylebone scored 246 runs in the first innings. The last scores are: Valentine 60, Chapman 97, Jardine 7, Hendren 6. The West Indian team lost 7 wickets for 190 runs in its second innings, the highest score being by Constantine, with 51 runs. Despite the West Indians' protest that they are not purposely bumping the ball, not a few onlookers at Lords formed the opinion that the fast bowlers were-giving Jardine's men a taste of their own medicine.
They bowled fewer "bumpers" today, though Constantine sent down at least two in every over, noticeably discomfiting the batsmen until Chapman and Valentine found a way of circumventing them. It should be emphasised that the field was orthodox, with only one at short leg, when Jardi'ne and Hendren- were simply caught. Hendren prepared for the worst, however, and carried a protective cap in his pocket, but batted without it. He confessed later that he would have been more confident if he had worn
it. The Star comments that it would have been interesting for Marylebone if Constantine 'had employed Larwood's leg field, and would probably have dismissed the Marylebone team for under a hundred.
The Yorkshire papers alone give prominence to the opinion of Mr. Southerton, editor of Wisdens, who said that if Saturday's bowling, even allowing for no leg field, is at all comparable with the methods exploited in Australia, it was rather an unedifying' sight, calculated to spoil the game as a spectacle and the enjoyment of those playing, and one can appreciate what was thought both by the Australian players and by the better behaved of the spectators.
