DOUBLE DUEL
AMERICAN AND TWO FRENCHMEN. Police action may follow two dramatic duels which, it is revealed, took place recently at Marly le Roi, near Paris, between an American, formerly an officer in the United States Army, and two socially prominent Frenchmen, one of whom is reported to be near death. According to reports, the quarrel resulted from a letter received by the American containing statements which he regarded as insulting toward his wife, who is French. Suspecting a former French officer of writing the letter, he struck him in the face in the Place des Ternes, Paris. The Frenchman challenged the American to a duel, and pistols were chosen. At the encounter the Frenchman was shot in the side, his own bullet going wide. It appears that his second, holding that seme irregularity had occurred in the duel, picked a further quarrel with the American, who invited him to a duel there and then. On this occasion the American received a superficial wound and the Frenchman a bullet in the throat. The American has since been challenged to a third duel by a friend of the two Frenchmen.
