PROLONGED LIFE.
It would be hard to exaggerate the importance of an annual “vetting” of the mechanism as a help towards maintaining the good running quali-
ties of the car and prolonging its useful life, says a writer in the Sydney Morning Herald. If the vehicle is, so to speak, spring-cleaned at least once a year repair bills will be minimised, the timely adjustment of this or that part will avert or delay costly wear and tear, and the aggregate sum expended on maintenance over a period of years will undoubtedly be far less than is the case when the chassis is neglected until its bad condition demands immediate attention.
In short, do not drive your car until lack of smooth running and pulling power indicate the need for serious repairs, but rather nip such troubles in the bud by an inexpensive overhaul at least once a year, or after each* 10,000 miles. Most of us are nowadays intent upon reducing the expenses of car owning, but the periodical inspection and tuning of the chasis should 'not be costly, provided the car owner is able to make a preliminai’y general examination and to determine the major items with which he is unable to grapple and which must be entrusted to the service station. A great proportion of the costs of overhauling is made up by labour charges, but the amateur who has a fair knowledge of the construction of his car, and who studies its instruction book carefully, should be able to carry out much of the work during his leisure time.
