LEAGUE OF NATIONS
SECRETARIAT SALARY REDUCTIONS. DELEGATES STILL WRANGLING. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.45 a.m..) Geneva, October 5. A long debate occurred on salary reductions of the League secretariat, in which Sir Thomas Wilford proposed that a test case was unjustifiable because of the delay it would cause. The committee by 20 votes to 12, adopted the Hilton-Young motion that jurists should submit an early opinion whether the reductions are legal. The commission is now debating Mr. Young’s motion proposing a 10 per cent, reduction from the 25th of .October. In the Budget Committee Sir Thomas Wilford asked whether it was necessary that internal services of the staff should be so numerous and so expensive. He suggested the abolition of the League’s offices in London and Paris, and the branch offices in Rome, Tokio and Berlin. The chairman promised a later opportunity of raising- the question. Sir Thomas Wilford moved an amendment that any reduction should not be applicable to recipients of salaries under £460 annually.
