RUSTY SPRINGS.

The springs of my car are beginning to look rusty along the edges, and although they are kept as clean as possible the rust soon appears again after it is wiped away, and spoils the appearance of the car

(writes a correspondent to “The Autocar”). Will it interfere with the comfort of the passengers and can it be avoided? In all probability the efficiency of the springs has been deteriorating slowly for some time, so that you have not noticed that the comfort is 'not what it used to be. Clean the springs well with paraffin and a stiff' brush, then put the jack under the frame of the car, not under the axle or spring, so that when extended it will relieve the spring of load. Remove any spring clips, and then introduce graphite grease between the spring leaves with an old knife blade or with one of the special lubricating devices which can be obtained for the purpose. If the springs are not very rusty it may be sufficient to clear them well, and give them a liberal application of penetrating oil, which will find its way in between the spring leaves.
