PERSONAL

Mr. D. V. Donaldson, of Christchurch, is visiting Te Kuiti. Mr. W. E. Lawson, clerk in charge of the Otorohanga office of the Waitomo Power Board, has been appointed as timekeeper and stores clerk to the Devonport Borough Council. Mr. Lawson leaves to take up his new duties on Monday. The death took place at Waitaraon Monday of an old and highly-respected resident of the Otorohanga district, Mr. Benjamin Budden. He was born at Netherbury, Dorset, England, 77 years ago, and came to New Zealand at the age of 19. He was a contractor in the Wellington district for many years. When the King Country was opened up, Mr. Budden took up a section at Honikiwi, some 10 miles from Otorohanga, the track in those early days, 33 years ago, being only suitable for pack-horses. Through Mr. Buddens' efforts, the main road was metalled and the various streams bridged. He was a member of the Masonic order and a prominent member of the Farmers' Union. Mr Budden disposed of his Honikiwi property about four years ago and was living on his farm at Waitara at the time of his death. He leaves a widow, four sons and four daughters.
