UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
THE T ASM AN lAN SYSTEM. CREATION OF NEW FARMS. Of the many schemes adopted in Australia for the utilisation of Government money for the relief of unemployment, none has been so successful as that of the Tasmanian Government. Under the special legislation passed a couple of years ago, 300 men have been given work. The attention of the Governments of the other Australian States has been directed to the scheme, and it is understood that some of them intend during the present winter to provide for absorption of large numbers of unemployed in a similar manner. Since the Acts came into force in Tasmania, about £55,000 has been spent, and in every district there is evidence of progress and development as a consequence. The Tasmanian legislation provides for loans to farmers on very favourable terms to enable them to engage bona fide unemployed persons to effect permanent improvements on their farm holdings, and for subsidies to be made available to bona fide unemployed persons to be engaged under similar conditions. An area of approximately 20,000 acres has been cleared and put under the plough, laid down in grass, or otherwise brought into cultivation. In some districts during the last year the whole of the unemployed have been absorbed. The Government intends, as soon as possible, to extend the assistance already granted.
