OVERLAPPING OF CREAM CARTS.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In replying to my previous letter, Mr. Reeve-Smith has chosen to be personal, but it does not strengthen his lamentably weak defence on behalf of the Aria Co-op. Dairy Co. Whether I am a farmer or a ratepayer is quite beside the point, and does not concern Mr. ReeveSmith; furthermore, I have a perfect right to voice my sentiments through the medium of the press on any subject if Iso desire. His allusion to my disloyalty towards the district in which I am gaining my livelihood is equally superfluous. My attack on the Aria Dairy Company was perfectly justified, and I still' maintain that it endeavoured to use a local body as a lever towards attaining its own ends. I do not profess to be an authority on finance, but I have always been under the impression that the annual balance sheet of any company is set forth to reveal to its shareholders an accurate statement of its financial position, hence my knowledge of the financial position of the Aria, Co-op. Dairy Company. Mr. Reeve-Smith claims that the company’s pay-out taken over a period of years has exceeded that of other similar companies. This is undoubtedly true up to a certain point, but if Mr ReeveSmith can prove to me that its payout has exceeded that of others during the past two years, he is an exceedingly clever man. In the face of the present serious . depression, that which has been achieved in the past is of little consequence; people are chiefly concerned with the present and the prospects for the future. I will venture to say that under existing circumstances the Aria Co-op. Dairy Factory is more likely to impede than aid the progress and prosperity of this, district. In conclusion I would like to suggest as a solution of the present difficulty caused by overlapping, that the shareholders and directors of the Aria Dairy Company lay aside all parochial feeling and sentiment and join forces with their neighbouring company, Pio Pio, before the foundations of both are seriously undermined through the invasion of their territory by a proprietary company. —I am, etc., EDWIN ROBBINS.
