ORIGIN OF THE TURKS

MUCH OLDER THAN ISLAM. FOUNDER OF MANY CIVILISATIONS. A new conception of the origin of the Turks is enjoying much propagandist encouragement. It is a philosophy of history, meant to influence the minds of the rising generation. The theory is that, by adopting Islam, the Turks have allowed their civilisation to be deviated from its course. The history of the Turks is declared to be much older than that of Islam. They furnished the world with the most important essentials of life, like the use of metals. Under the pressure of climatic conditions due to the glacial period their ancestors left their abodes in Central Asia, invaded the West, and constituted summits of civilisation under the names of Sumerians, Hittites, Lydians, Phrygians, Mycenians, Cretans, Etruscans, Ligurians, Iberians, and Celts ! A fourvolumed " History of the World " conceived in this sense has been edited by a committee composed of members of Parliament, two colonels, and the Gazi's adopted daughter, and placed under the presidency of Tevfik Bey, the Secretary-General to the President of the'* Republic. The first edition, beautifully printed, illustrated, and bound, is now the official text-book in Turkish schools.
