UNEMPLOYED

IN TE KUITI BOROUGH.

WAGES BILL OF £BO PER WEEK

That he was not too. pleased at the position from the point of view of numbers with unemployment as far as the Te Kuiti Borough is concerned was given expression to by His Worship the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., at last night's meeting of the Te Kuiti Borough Council when discussing a circular from the Unemployment Board.

His Worship added: "As far as our men are concerned they are mostly on useful or productive work, are they 'not? The Town Clerk: The only cleaningwork our men are doing is on the main street. They are chiefly engaged in willow poisoning, work at the hospital, drainage, and in the relief gardens. His Worship observed that the pay sheet showed a pay-out per week of £BO, £4OOO a year. "This sort of thing is dynamite," His Worship added. The town clerk explained that in the normal course of events the G2 would have been 50, but a "stand down" week had been arranged for Christmas week, in view of the fact that work was being provided for all the men for the two weeks prior to Christmas. His Worship expressed the hope that some of the local unemployed would be employed at the new lime works when it started operations, also that some could be absorbed in the borough's own quarry if there should be an increase in output. However, we musn't build any bridges till we have a stream to cross, the Mayor added.
