"The position is no so bad as it looks, and there is hope for some decision within a week," said Mr. D. Kirkwood, member for Dumbarton, after an hour's conference with the authorities at Brown's shipyards in relation to the Cunarder.
Owing to the economic position the Cunard Company decided to stop work on the 73,000 ton liner, already half constructed. The stoppage of this works means the dismissal of 3000 men.
