TRAGEDY IN CHINA SEAS
FIRE ON PASSENGER BOAT. DEATH OF 250 CHINESE. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 9.55 a.m.) Shanghai, December 14. Approximately 250 Chinese passengers on the Chinese inter-island steamer Tatch are believed to have perished early yesterday following an outbreak of fire sixty miles from Shanghai, according to accounts brought by survivors rescued by fishing junks. The company's officials dispute the passengers' estimate of the deaths, but the vessel was carrying 600 passengers and half are still missing. Eight of the survivors have already succumbed to exposure in the icy waters. A panic followed the fire, the cause of which is unknown. The vessel was beached and hundreds had already jumped into the water to escape the flames before the Tatch was destroyed. The same company's vessel Tachi was lost in similar circumstances last March when 600 lost their lives.-
