MANIAPOTO BAND

CONCERT AT PIO PIO.

The Town Hall was well filled on Sunday evening when the Maniapoto Silver Band visited Pio Pio. A good varied programme was presented, meeting with marked approval. The Band, under the conductorship of Mr. A. D. Timbers, was in splendid form, the light and shade of the various numbers being well defined. The programme included the following items:—March, "The Rousers ; overture, "Harmony Queen ; Handel's celebrated Largo; song selection, "I Bring a Love Song ';. march, "My Temptation." In addition, the favourite hymn, "Onward Christian Soldiers," was played, the audience joining in by singing. In the vocal portion of the programme, Mr. Mowat was particularly pleasing in both of his numbers, "Red Devon and "Heart of Gold." Dr. Isaac received a warm reception and delighted his audience with "The Crown of t the Year" and "Courage." The Harmony Four—Messrs. Nelson, George, Henniker and Howell —gave 'SpenSpen," and 'Ole Virginny," their fine performance being very pleasing indeed and was well received. The instrumental soles were above the average. Mr. Pat O'Rourke repeated his Te Kuiti success in the cornet solo, "Nirvana," and Mr. Phil Swift's xylophone solo brought a well-merited recall. Quite a feature was the Pio Pio pianist, Mr. C. H. Paine. Donjon's "Rossignoulet" was his first number and for an encore Chopin's "Nocturne" was rendered. Miss Roie Hogan accompanied the vocal numbers most pleasingly, and Miss I. Oates effectively aided Mr. Paine's flute at the piano. Mr. Allison acted as stage manager and returned thanks to Mrs. Peterson for stage furnishings and to the audience for the very satisfactory collection. \ A further visit by the band to Pio Pio is proposed later.
