“CHEER UP DANCE”

MANGAPEEHI FUNCTION. (Own Correspondent.) A most enjoyable evening was spent on Saturday, 9th May, at the Mangapeehi Hall, when the local committee of the Anglican Church organised a “Cheer Up” social and dance. The hall was tastefully decorated with blue and white streamers, pom-poms and punga ferns. A stringed instrument orchestra, conducted by Mr. Henry Davey, of Pukemako, rendered an excellent programme of dance music. Musical and vocal items were rendered at intervals between the dances. A trio (piano) by the Misses Needham and Miss Buck was much appreciated. Solos were sung by Mrs. Farquhar and Mr. D. P. Smith, accompanied at the piano by Miss Buck. Both singers were enthusiastically encored; by special request Mrs. Farquhar gave an excellent rendering of “E Pari Ra.” Mr. and Mrs. Jensen kindly lent their bagatelle table and bobs set, the stage being reserved for these games. The prize for the highest score at bagatelle was won by Miss Watson, and for the bobs prize by Mr. Nicol.

The supper room was reserved for euchre players. Mrs. Seymour won the first prize for ladies and Mrs. Vickers gained the consolation prize. Mr. Edmonds won the first prize for men and Mr. H. Davey won the large box of chocolates. After partaking of an excellent supper which included a special brew of cafe au lait so generously provided by the ladies, each and all seemed to be having a good time. Mr. Buck, on behalf of the committee, presented the prizes and expressed thanks for the very fine attendance, and also to the donors of prizes, namely, Miss Hornibrook, Mrs. Brumby, Mrs. Buck, Mrs. Jones, Mr. H. Hayes, and Mr. J. B. Halcombe. Special thanks were accorded to Mr. H. Davey and the orchestra, this being their first public appearance. Mr. Seymour and Mr. Jones very efficiently discharged the duties of M.C. The evening terminated by all singing “God Save the King” to orchestral accompaniment.
