The French Chamber of Deputies has approved of a report proposing to double the present duty on foreign butter. At present the du y stands at two francs per kilo.
Mr. Yoshiwara, a Japanese airman who was flying across the Pacific, was overdue and regarded as lost, until a steamer, after searching for nine hours, discovered him taking refuge in a bay in the Kurile Islands. He was forced down by fog.
The counting of most of the electoral divisions in Tasmania has been completed. So far 17 Nationalists and nine Labourites have been elected.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Philip Snowden, has suffered a relapse. It is feared that he overtaxed his strength in introducing the Budget. He is confined to his bed at No. 11, Downing Street.
A graphic story of the finding of Mr. Augustine Courtauld was told by the rescuers who, after a very difficult seardh, saw a mound of snow on top of which was a hole. This was the chimney of Mr. Courtauld’s buried hut.
No announcement has yet been made by the Federal Ministry of the steps it proposes to take to meet the Australian debts falling due in London on June 30.
A writ claiming £IO,OOO for alleged libel was served on “Smiths” Newspapers, Limited, on behalf of Stamford, Limited, a Sydney firm trading also in Wellington and Auckland.
