The severe retalitory measures adopted by the French Government since the Scullin Government amended the tariff schedule was revealed by the Minister of Industries, Mr. F. M. Forde, who states that the French Government has imposed a super-tax of 200 per cent, about the previous rates on Australian wheat and butter.
The Melbourne slaughtermen's strike against the reduction in wages is still in progress. .AH the export works now are idle, but householders are procuring fair supplies of meat from country killing centres.
The world-famous Seville Cathedral and the equally well-known statue of the Virgin of Carmel were ruthlessly set on fire by a sacrilegious mob that ran riot in the fourth city of the country yesterday. The priceless treasures of centuries in art and architecture are now a mass of burned debris. The destruction to monastic property has been widespread throughout Spain. The city is stated to be in the hands of the rioters.
The Jhansi branch of the Youth League, which is a Communist organisation throughout India, celebrated the anniversary of the Indian Mutiny yesterday with processions. Redshirted boys and girls marched through the streets singing revolutionary songs, carrying Congress flags and- photographs of the three men executed at Lahore last month for a terrorist conspiracy. Inflammatory speeches were made in the evening meeting.
A prominent of the Ogpu (secret police),' who organised the revolution in Korea, has gone to Madrid with instructions from the executive of the Third (Communist) International to organise the Spanish Communists. , ;„

Pictures from the famous Strogonoff collection were sold by auction at Berlin on the instructions of the Soviet Government. Two Vandycks realised £37,500, and Rembrandt's "Christ and the Woman of Samaria," £12,000. One hundred and twenty pictures realised £95,000.
