ROADS AND MAINTENANCE. REPORT BY ENGINEER. The engineer, Mr. M. Fennell, in his monthly report submitted at yesterday’s meeting of the Waitomo Council, dealt with the following works and maintenance carried out during the past month:— Hangatiki Riding.—Usual maintenance of Caves-Mangapohue Road has been attended to. The portion of Caves Road leading out of Waitomo requires metal patching and will be attended to. Usual maintenance has been attended to on Rangitoto and Ahoroa Roads. Metalling on Ahoroa Road is proceeding. Grader has been working over Te Kuiti-Hangatiki Road.

Mairoa Riding.—Usual maintenance work by surfacemen has been attended to. Fullerton’s Road is being overhauled, tables opened and formation crowned up. The grader has been working over Mairoa and Arapae roads, also Te Kuiti-Hangatiki Road. Paemako Riding.—Heavy rains of the 20th caused damage to various roads, principally in the Kiritehere Valley. The main damage being slips, a breakaway on the Mangakokopu Road, near Mr. Saunders, also washout of the embankment at Kiritehere Bridge, and considerable metal scour. The river near the Council’s cottage has altered its course and protective works may be necessary. A culvert on Kiritehere Road, near Mr. Hopkins, was washed out. Repairs are being effected to keep l’oad safe for traffic. Cost of damage £250. The breakaway on Waitanguru Hill has subsided for a distance of three chains, but passable for traffic. There was also a subsidence on Mangaotaki Road, this has been attended to. Breakaway on lower side of Mangataki Road, near Mr. Dodds’, requires to be widened to keep safe for traffic. The repairs to Mangakowhai Road are in hand, also metalling on Te Kuiti-Pio Pio Road. Grader has been working over Te Kuiti-Pio Pio, Mairoa and Aria-Wai-rere roads.

Te Kuiti Riding. Usual repair work on various roads has been attended to. The clearing of Council’s section at Aratoro is in hand. Awakino Rfidi'ngq Considerable damage was caused on the Manganui Road by heavy rainfall on the 20th ultimo. Culverts washed out, large slips, breakaway of road sides and the approach to Waikawau Bridge was washed out. Cost to repair damage £6OO. This road is open for traffic, with the exception of Waikawau Bridge, where a temporary span is being erected, pending permanent repairs, for which tenders are called.

Mahoenui Riding. —Usual maintenRoad will be undertaken during the coming week. Aria Riding. Usual maintenance works on various roads have been attended to. Slips are being removed on Owen Road. On the Pai’O Road a filling and culvert is required to prevent water overflowing road. Contractor has commenced work on Tikitiki and Mapara roads. Formation is nearing completion and metalling is underway. In connection with carting of timber on Paro Road the damage likely to occur would be met by a charge of 2d per 100 ft. on the metalled portion and the miller to maintain the clay portion at his own expense to the satisfaction of the Council. Metalling on Potaka Road is proceeding.

Tangitu Riding.—Usual maintenance of Takiri-Mokauiti Road has been attended to. Metalling on Mangateka fiat is proceeding and should be linked up next week. The erection of Hiwi Stream Bridge is in hand. Power grader has been working over TakiriMangateka and Kahara Roads.
