“HITLERISM”
POSITION IN GERMANY. VISITOR’S IMPRESSION. • The opinion that “Hitlerism” was only a passing phase in Germany was expressed by Professor J. MacmillanBrown, of Christchurch, who returned by the Rotorua on Saturday evening. Hitler, said Professor MacmillanBrown, was not a German, and the next elections would probably see his stock falling fairly considerably. Transformation of the life of the country through his methods was not likely to occur, especially if business, trade, and the standard of living improved. With the general distress in Germany at the present time, a certain section of the community was an easy mark for Hitler’s eloquence and the principles he advocated. The average educated young German was strongly opposed to the Hitlerites, and this confined Professor Mac-millan-Brown’s relief that the movement would not endure.
Referring to the world-wide economic troubles, Professor MacmillanBrown said he considered that it would take a generation, if not two, to get out of the present financial depth. England would probably take as long to recover as she did after the Napoleonic wars. In England he saw much evidence of suffering. The most discussed subject there was the dole, in regard to which many people were pessimistic, believing that it would result in a generation of young people without the inclination to work. The parades of unemployed he had seen were made up of persons of all ages. France was to-day in a better position than any other country in Europe owing to her smaller population, the result of birth control. A man’s estate was by law split up between his children, as a result of legislation introduced in revolutionary time, and a great many knew that it would mean very small shares to their children unless they limited their families to two or three.
