FINAL TEST MATCH

ENGLAND OUT FOR 405. AUSTRALIA TWO WICKETS FOR 215. (Press Association!—Copyright.) (Received 10.5 a.m.) London, August 18. The final test match was continued on the Oval, England scoring 405 runs for the first innings. The Australians have lost two wickets for 215 runs, as follows: — AtSTRALIA—First Innings. Woodfull, c Duckworth, b Peebles 54 Ponsford, b Peebles HO Bradman, not out 27 Kippax, not out U Extras 13 Total for two wickets .. .. 215 Both Woodfull and Ponsford opened promisingly, five runs coming from Larwood’s first over and ten runs from Tate’s. The former bowled with great pace, but Ponsford faced him confidently and made the total 50 in even time.

Peebles used his googlies without effect. Wyatt, the Englaish captain, was the next change bowler, but Ponsford went on scoring rapidly, while Woodfull was satisfied to play on steadily. Ponsford drove Hammond to the ropes, making the total 100, and his own contribution 75. Wyatt then consulted Hobbs and Larwood took up the attack, but Ponsford continued driving and cutting vigorously and reached his fourth century of the tour. Woodful was then only 33. Peebles, with his third ball after the tea adjournment, bowled Ponsford when he was 110. The outgoing batsman had probably played the best innings he has ever played in England. Rain began to fall as Bradman reached the wickets and play resumed after an interval of forty minutes, but it was again stopped owing to the bad light. On resuming Bradman and Woodful scored freely until the Australian captain was smartly caught at the wicket by Duckworth, who jumped joyfully when the umpire signalled the batsman out. The total was now 190 runs for two wickets. Kippax, who replaced Woodfull at the crease, scored four twos to leg, and at stumps the pair were still together, having added 25 runs . Australia is considered to be in a sound position, being 190 behind with eight wickets to fall.
