FATAL ACCIDENT AT HONIKIWI.
WOOD SPLINTER IN BRAIN.
DEATH OF ELDERLY MAN
When trying out a new circular saw at Mr. Carlin’s farm at Honikiwi on Sunday afternoon, Henry Parkes (56), a single man, who formerly resided at Waimiha, met his death through a flying splinter entering his eye and lacerating the brain. An inquest was held late on Sunday afternoon, before the district coroner, Mr. R. M. Someiwille. Tlie evidence showed that the deceased was trying out a new circular saw. He had been working about an hour when a large splinter about 2ft 6ins in length flew off the wood on which the saw was being used, with the result described. Death was instantaneous.
A verdict of accidental death from circumstances as above was returned. The late Mr Parkes was born in Dannevirke and was engaged in sawmilling and farming all his life. He spent most of his life in the Hunterville district, and came to Waimiha about 1912. Deceased came of a highly-respected family of Hunterville, members of which still reside in that district. He was a man of the highest integrity and a hard worker. As one who knew him well said, he was a man without an enemy.
