DISTRICT NEWS.
TANGITU. (Own Correspondent.) It was a real gala day for the Waimiha school pupils on Tuesday, 18th inst., when, in the school grounds the pupils were treated in a grand manner prior to breaking up for the Christmas and New Year holidays. There was an> elaborate Tree covered with toys and books of all description, and each pupil received a book or toy from Santa Claus from off the 'tree. There was a great gathering of parents and residents to enjoy the event with the kiddies, and Waimiha can be proud of the splendid way in which it had helped to make possible such a treat for the school pupils. Recitations, play-acting, Old Folk dancing and the Maypole were some of the features of the function, and all present entered with proper spirit into the various items on the programme. Much praise is due to Mr Osborne, schoolmaster, for the high standard of work attained at the school during the last year, and the able assistance given him by Miss Knight, teacher, must not be overlooked. The recitations and play rendered by the pupils during the afternoon were of a class worthy of listening to, and reflects creditably again on the work of the teachers. Certificates for best atattendance were presented by Mr C. E. Middleton, chairman of the school committee, who made some very appropriate remarks and eulogised the work of both Mr Osborne and Miss Knight. The parents are also to be commended for the manner in which they liad helped. A splendid lunch was provided and all present did this ample justice. It was a very enjoyable affair from beginning to end, and when three cheers were called for Mr Osborne, by the chairman, the heartiness with which the crowd responded was a fitting indication as to the esteem in which he is held by the pupils, parents and residents of Waimiha. If Mr Osborne will have the privilege of continuing his work at the Waimiha school for another year, we look forward to great progress as far as the pupils in general are concerned. The chairman and school committee can be proud of this function although, as they state, all the credit is due to the enthusiasm of the teachers for complete success.
The dance held in the evening in the Native Hall was an unqualified success, and when it is stated that Swift's orchestra were the musicians for the evening nothing but the very large crowd present was to be expected, the hall was far from adequate for the occasion. Mr At. Reid, who acted as M.C., carried out his duties to the satisfaction of all. The entertainment in the afternoon, and the dance in the evening marked one of the most enjoyable and happy days spent by Waimibians for some years. Mi- F. Proctor, teacher, Tangitu school, left by the evening train on Wednesday, 19th inst., to spend the Christmas at his parents' home at Foxton.
Mr M. Fennell, county engineer, was on a visit to the district during the week, inspecting all works under his supervision. He was accompanied by the riding councillor, Mr J. Andrew.
