HANGATIKI-CAVES ROAD.
REPLY TO WAISTOIYIO COUNTY’S REPUTATION. ASSISTANCE FROM GOVERNMENT. At yesterday’s meeting of the Waitonio County Council, Mr J. C. Rolleston, M.P., forwarded a communication from the Hon. K. S. Williams, Minister of Public Works, in reply to a deputation from the Council which waited on tlie Minister on the occasion of his last visit to Te Kuiti, in respect to the Caves-Hangatiki Road.. Tho letter stated:—
“The Main Highways Board advises that at a recent meeting it was decided to vary the previous decision to contribute a sum of £1275, £3 for £l, towards the cost of reconditioning tho road from Hangatiki to Waitomo Caves Hostel. Tho Board having received a statement from the Waitomo County Council that it would contribute £2OO towards the cost of reconditioning the road, and would also make a sum of £125, £1 for £3, available for subsequent maintenance during the current financial year, has now decided to make a sum of £ISOO available towards the cost of reconditioning estimated at £I7OO, and subsequent maintenance will he subsidised on the basis of £3 for £1 as previously agreed upon.” , It was pointed out that this would mean that for the reconditioning of the road the Highways Board was contributing £7 10s to the County s £l. • . Councillors considered tjhis satisIt was mentioned, however, that the Waitomo Settlers’ Association considered that, the Council’s contribution for maintenance was too high in comparison to the nature of the work, and accordingly it was left in the hands of Cr Lee and the engineer to deal further with the matter.
