DISTRICT NEWS.

AWAKINO. (Own Correspondent.) The Awakino School held a concert on Wednesday, at which a large number of visitors from Mahoenui, Mokau, Uruti, as well as many local people, were present. The young people entertained the audience with a. fine selection of items. They were assisted by Miss MacKenzie, Mahoenui, who danced several Scotch dances which were enthupiastdoally .encored; Mr Luker, w T ho gave a humorous monologue, and for an encore a. humorous sketch of the duties of a curate; and Mr MacKenzie, Mahoenui, who also gave two very amusing character sketches. ■*'' The children’s items were as follows:—Chorus song, “Good Mother Hen,” sung by the junior pupils of the school; recitation, “Five Little Pussy Cats,” by Mary Calvert; song, “Three little, Kittens,'*” sttng by junior school; recitation, “The Goblin-liaunted Girl,” by Patricia Calvert; solo, “Moonboat,” sung by Miss Ethel Batley; duet, Maori song, by Margaret and Dickie Hunt. An exhibition of physical drill by the senior pupils was very well received. As a final item a short farce entitled “The Village School” was acted by the following artists:—Mr F. Northern, “Mr Tortoise”; Miss F. Northern, “Mrs Grumpit” ; Master, Stanley Jones, “Daniel Dreamer”; Master Louis Bartlett, “George Goodcake” ; Master John Gray, “Simon Snoozer” ; Miss Patricia Calvert, “Beryl Baumer” ; Miss Royala Calvert, “Norah Newman”; Miss Phyllis Jones, “Poppy Pensive.” The audience showed their appreciation of the farce with peals of laughter at every witticism that occurred in the piece. A dainty supper urns provided by the patents of the pupils, and the supper arrangements were in the hands of the committeemen Fo,ivy vbgk vbgk vbgk wives of the committeemen, namely Mesdames L. R. Jones, K. Black, Gray and Bryant. Dancing was kept up until the small hours of the morning, the dance music being supplied by Mrs McNeice and Mesdames F. Northern and R. Luker. Extras were played by Miss Ida Hanson and C. Stewart. Mr E. Aroa made a very efficient M.C. There were five children to obtain a full attendance certificate this year, and Mr L. R. Jones, chairman of the school committee, presented the prizes to them a,Her congratulating the children on their achievement. The children were :—Patricia Calvert, Royala Calvert, John Grey, Phyllis Jones and Richard Lake. The local bowlers are patronising; the local green very well, and every evening one may see a number of players taking part in friendly matches. Tennis is in full swing and players are practising in preparation for the competitions which commence early in the New Year.
