Next day the man, who had acquirucd millions through wholesale traffic in illicit liquors, calmly confessed to the crime and declared that lie was driven to it by the “unwritten law” and his “debt to society.” The two principals in the tragedy were both divorcees, and were suing each other for divorce. Mrs Remus entered a taxicab to visit her lawyer, accompanied by her nineteen-year-old daughter, Ruth, a child by a former matriage. Mr Remus, in a private motor car, followed and forced the taxicab to the kerb. Mrs Remus then jumped out, with her husband in pursuit. When ho overtook her in the park hie seized her, drew her closely to him, and fired a pistol at her breast. As she sank to the pavement screaming, Remus mado bis escape, but later gave himself up to the police.
